Emerson Walkthrough

This house is hands down my absolute favorite. In fact, if I had to keep only one house, I would keep the Emerson over the Kaleidoscope. It's sturdy, it won't yellow in the sun, the real wood is beautiful and it's self lighting. I couldn't have designed it better myself!

The Great Room Check out the solar lights, even during the day they are nice and bright.
I love that the stairs are separate so they don't monopolize a room.
Even in bright light the fireplace is clearly visible.

And, of course, they are watching Project Runway : )

The Exterior

I'll have to scout out some cool patio furniture to make a roof top scene. This square looked more blue in the photos on the website. I kinda thought it was meant to be a pool but it seems more like a concrete patio in person. Still, very cool.
The second roof top area is a lawn. All of my patio furniture here is from Mighty World which runs a little small.
The last platform is for the solar panels. I have left my house near an open window for about a day and the panels seem to charge quickly. I love that there's no wiring to mess with and no cords to hide like the Stockholm.
No time to charge the panels? No problem! These guys have literally thought of everything. The house comes with 3 AA rechargeable batteries, pre-installed so you will always have light. Plus, since they are NiMH they'll work on any battery re-charger. They fit behind this sliding door right by the switch. A few people have asked about the Flagstone. It's made of vinyl and it's similar to shelf liner. There's no embossing but it is still extremely life like in photos. Also, the house comes with plugs to cover all of the screw holes. They take a little finessing and I was pretty eager to set up scenes so that will have to wait. : )

The Study
This little room above the Great Room may be my favorite. It definitely has the most versatility. For now, I made it a study but only because I was dying to use the guitar, Pac Man and drafting table.

The Bathroom
I used Lundby bathroom furniture to show how the 1:16th furniture fits. Honestly, I think it accommodates 1:12 and 1:16 equally well. Sigh...perfect house!

The Master Bedroom
I made this bed myself in an attempt to make something close the Paris Renfroe bed I can't bring myself to buy. I've been wanting to use it forever so I'm happy to have finally found a great room for it.

The Dining Room

This is the last room I set up and it's pretty sparse. I found these drawer pulls at IKEA months ago. I think they are make great modern bench seating. So that's the tour! This house truly is something special and I know everyone that has a chance to own one will love it every bit as much as I do. I'd also like to say that the customer service from the guys at Brinca Dada is as wonderful as their products. I actually received an Emerson for my birthday last month from the few that were sent to FAO Schwartz. Sadly, it arrived badly damaged and I was heartbroken. When we notified Brinca Dada much to their credit they immediately made it right. In fact, their CEO Doug personally took the time to make sure we were satisfied. I could not be happier.

The MoMA house came this afternoon and I could not be more impressed. I tried to document everything from the start. To begin with it was packaged extremely well, entirely encased in foam so there was no chance of damage. It's looks like it is made from cardboard but it is thick and looks to be very durable.

The packaging unfolds to provide full color assembly instructions for all of the furniture provided. It's quick to assemble, tab and slot construction, but if this may be helpful for younger kids.

It also comes with a little introduction book that looks like it is geared towards getting kids to think about spacial design. Also on nice cardstock. No detail was overlooked!

Here are all six of the interchangeable surfaces on the front....

This is my absolute favorite feature of this house. There are four panels that can be placed in the recessed areas of the wall to show a modern painting, real life aquarium....wait for it....

a giant plasma tv and a FIREPLACE!

Next on to the flooring and ground cover. It is made of the same thick, glossy cardstock. You can see how thick this is! It will definitely stand up to some hard use and not show a nick or scratch.

It even comes with vinyl cling accessories. Check out the chiminea!

The furniture was incredibly easy to to put together. I had the pieces put together in under 10 minutes without needing the instructions. The parts are clearly labeled and snap out of the cardboard without ripping. In my excitement I tore a little piece of one of the chairs but since the paper is pre-scored it didn't tear the design. Now THAT's great thinking!

The furniture is a little small for 1:12, I'd say it's definitely closer to 1:16 scale.

And ta da...the FIRST scene!

This was a breeze to put together and SO much fun. I thought about adding in some of my other pieces but just wanted to see how it all worked together for now.

Outdoor seating - dig the grass!

This would be a great introduction to the hobby. It's a tremendous value for any budget and provides limitless possibilities in a compact design. I can't wait to try this out with my other pieces. The walls would be excellent room dividers in the K House and the Stockholm too.

If you have been looking for the Miele kitchen set then get thyself to Mini Bijou Miniatures STAT! I saw one on German eBay going for considerably more last week. I have been looking for the cabinets for over a year and this is the first time I have found them. They were sold out a few days ago but it looks like they are back in stock. The people there are great and shipping, even internationally, was fast. Plus, the cabinet set is only 15 pounds, so roughly about $25.

Lastly, on my quest for a wedding dress I went to Cincinnati and while we were there I had my first IKEA experience. I found drawer handles that will make perfect side tables and tons of inspiration. More to come on that too!

Looks like the modern dollhouse movement is taking shape, we're news baby! If you haven't seen today's article in the New York Times click here. I am thrilled to see our hobby in such a great light. Who knows, maybe this exposure can even lead to more modern miniatures on the market. It would be great if companies started realizing people want to model the world around them.

Nothing like a major news story (ahem, front page of the Home section) to lend some credibility to the hobby no one knew you had.

I am probably the last mini-lover to post on the jaw-dropping, modern prayers answered, wonder that is the Emerson House but I had to officially say how thrilled I am that this is just around the corner. Sleek, contemporary design, open floor plan, RECESSED LIGHTING??? This must be karma patting us on the back for weeding through all the re-hashed Victorian furniture to find anything close to cool. Check out the Brinca Dada website if, like me, you can't wait and feel the need to pre-order.

So this has pretty much been my life for the past few months, work stuffed into nooks and crannies, papers spilling out of binders, caffeine within arms reach... no wonder that's what came to mind. I also liked that this room is set up to work on a sweet mini dollhouse, courtesy of Oese.

I have been eyeing this nifty little Plan Toys House on eBay this week. It doesn't look like it would take up a ton of space, a definite plus since the workroom is getting cramped, and I LOVE those panels. They give it a K House feel that works well with the light wood. I'd like to see how it works with 1:12 items though since I have the furniture set and it seems to run a little small. Anyone out there have this little jewel?

While window shopping on the Plan Toys website I also found this little house.

It's definately got a lot of potentional as well. Sure it's a little on the small side but it looks like it could be an interesting addition to the Green Dollhouse. Maybe a cabana or a Jimmy Neutron type lab... I kinda want them both!

K House Redo

Or two in one day what...WHAT? :)

So I spent a little time in the work room today putting together two scenes. I debated on posting this one later this week since I start my new job tomorrow and knew I'd be too busy to post much of anything but everything was all done so, VOILA, two posts in one day!

I've been on a teeny tiny mini binge lately, see above re: new job, and have been trying to use all of my new stuff. This set up started as mostly trying to find a way to showcase the incredible work of Mini Modernista. You can drool over her amazingness here on eBay. Trust me the pictures don't do her incredible work justice.

As happy as know I should be with the K House I think I just got a lemon. As in Lemon Yellow. I've mentioned before it was not as pictured so I am doing my best to make lemonade : ) Thankfully my wonderful guy spent a few hours today helping me fit a faux (removable) floor in the great room. I think it's a wonderful thing. It camouflages the discolored floors - God knows I was running out of rugs - and kinda gives it some realism.

One Bed Two Ways

I wanted to see if I could find a reason to work this pink chaise in to a setting. I liked this bed so much from my last post I used it again. For some reason I really like the pink and green color scheme in the polka dot room.

When my Ryan's Room coffee table arrived it was missing a leg so I improvised and used the legs from the dining room table to turn it into a desk.

I also REALLY hated the squiggly legs on this AG minis desk so I revamped it. Maybe I should have called this the deconstructed dollhouse blog because I am forever taking things apart to repurpose them.

I went upstairs to take a picture of the new workspace. The Kaleidoscope was sitting there empty so I couldn't resist setting up a quick scene. Plus I had two or three new things from summer that I hadn't used yet.

I have to admit my Kaleidoscope arrived more yellowed than it looked online. It's a little challenging to get the look I want but I still love the house.

Oh yeah, one other thing, all of these should be enlargeable...I think that's a word. : )

It's been a busy summer and all of the miniatures have found a new home in an actual workroom, you know the kind with real light and tables and shelving! I'll have to post some pictures soon. Things are finally slowing down both at work and home so I should be back to minis soon. We're also heading out for a vacation to Colorado so if anyone knows any great mini stores out there leave me a comment. A girl can only watch fly fishing for so long... : )

Since the Kaleidoscope is still taking over the living room (man this thing is HUGE) the lighting situation is, well...rough. I need 5 hands to hold a lamp, angle the light, zoom the camera and press the button. Anyhow, I know the pics are lacking but I'm having fun with my Kaleidoscope. I may even re-shoot these once I move the house this weekend.

For some reason, the ladders don't appeal to me. Not knocking em, but I kinda like it with this makeshift media center.

Girl With Kaleidoscope Eyes...

It's FINALLY here.

I know I took way too many pictures but I wanted to start everywhere at once. For some reason I could not figure out what to put in this house, I guess I'm still in awe, so a few of the things are repeats from my last setting. I promise to branch out with my next post. Right now I just stare at the rooms hoping something comes to mind.

The Stockholm has taken over the dining room so the Kaleidoscope House is in the living room. There's not as much light and I end up getting our stuff in the background so a move is imminent.

I love this telescope. It's made by the same artist that made the little grey one on the patio of the Stockholm. They were two of the first minis I ever bought. In fact, I love them so much that when they're not in a setting they're on our bookcase.

Thanks to CallSmall for the lamp idea in the recessed area. This is a Lundby lamp flipped but I think it works.

This is either some karmic retribution for something heinous I did eons ago or a life lesson in patience. My Kaleidoscope is finally here, except it's not. I came home yesterday, certain that after suffering through the three day weekend it would be waiting on my front porch. No such luck. I sulked to the mailbox, muttering under my breath, and pulled out a little peach slip saying my package was at the post office. Sweet! I could be there in under 5 minutes. Then I actually read the note that says, sorry, no dice, you can only pick it up after 8:00 am on Wednesday.

So I work all day knowing when I get off I'm going to pick up my house. I leave work, the sun is shining, the birds are singing, get to my car, call my fiancee, tell him I'm on the way to pick it up at the branch on the card. He asks for the name of the branch, he googles it, but I'm pretty sure I know where I'm going so I only half listen. When I repeat the address I see in teeny tiny print that they are only open til 4:30.

Crap.

It's 4:40

Reluctantly I forge ahead hoping that maybe someone will take pity on me and still let me in. I drive to the main branch. It's still open! I go in, wait in line, only to hear "this isn't the right building, go two blocks down, take a left..."

I stop listening.

I eventually leave, completely dejected and drive home. I wrestle with asking the mailman to redeliver it. It is 90 degrees this week and the thought of leaving a plexiglass house on the porch in the heat is not appealing. On the other hand, I know I have no shot of being out of the office and to this branch, that might as well be in Russia, by 4:30. I resign myself to the fact that I will have to have it redelivered.

I start to fill in the form, which is a cross between swearing on a Bible and retaking the SAT, so that my house will finally be here waiting for me, and it says since my signature is required I have to pick it up in person.

Meaning I wait until Saturday.

I'm trading the Jetta in for a DeLorean. I'm pretty sure with a puffy vest and a flux capacitor I can make this work.

The Waiting Is The Hardest Part

So the Kaleidoscope isn't here yet and I may die waiting. I knew when it wasn't here Saturday I was in for a loooong weekend. Thankfully CallSmall posted some pics of her new Kaleidoscope so I could live vicariously. Fingers crossed it will be here tomorrow.

To keep busy I made a new Stockholm setting. I like the kitchen / dining room idea but I wanted to separate the space somehow. I tried hanging dividers but it was kinda blah. So I improvised and made a makeshift fireplace.

I am kinda proud of how this little wall turned out. In a very vague way it kinda reminds me of the ultra cool Paris Renfroe shelves...except nowhere close.

The leather rug is a fabric swatch that I debated on cutting into straight edges, then remembered I can't cut a straight line so the zig zag stayed.

The Wyeth painting isn't super mod but I like it. I probably could have changed the frame but it was glued on. Also I'm a Christina so how could I not love Christina's World?

I finally have a working light in a scene, it's a big day for me. All I really wanted to do was work my new Rement orange cubes into a setting and it turned into this. I think I am the most proud of this setting so far. The company I work for had us all do this personality test to see what color we were today. Orange people are fearless risk-takers. I wouldn't know though, I'm a gold, for whatever that's worth. Guess I'm letting my inner orange out. Or maybe I was just able to lay my hands on a lot of orange accessories today.

The orange tile wall is from the Mighty World Bakery Set. The make shift frames are cookie sheets from the same set. Couch and table are Bozart. Orange cubes are Rement. Little goldfish and Hermes bag were form a mini show in town. Finally, the black planter and chair are things my fiancee made for me.

My Rement room set made the journey from Asia to my front porch. I really wanted it for the white laptop like my MacBook. I may try to take a Mac screenshot to cover the Windows desktop that's on there. It's all about the details, right?

There are a few things I am especially proud of in this post. The painting was a Christmas gift from my fiancee. It's a miniature by a local artist that we have a lot of paintings by. The tv is my first mini find. It's a fridge magnet from a 99 cent store! I just cut out an ad picture for the image. If I do the screenshot for the laptop I might make a Lost screenshot for the tv. Finally, the desk rug is a cotton round.

Freebies

I bought four of the white Re-Ment Cafe chairs off of ebay recently thinking they would make sleek dining room chairs. They are bigger than I thought, definitely closer to 1:6 scale and I can't think of any place I can use them. I'm sure someone out there could put them to good use so they are free to good home. :)

If anyone would like to have them I can send them out this weekend.

Movie Night

In honor of Mother's Day, for my Mom who loves movie night. Although not usually with a tray of wine. I liked the pink & green color scheme and really wanted a reason to use the new Plan Toys furniture I bought. The Aztec tv is a little clunky but I liked the idea that these people have a HUGE tv. I also kinda like the polka dot room as a the living room as a change too.

I'm still working on theses tricky camera angles and lighting, obviously.

The couch, ottomans and tv stand are Plan Toys. The side tables are from the Target block set. The sideboard is Room By Room Bathroom cabinet, thanks to callsmall for the cabinet flipping idea.

Reason #4,892 to love Target

After seeing all of the amazing things other bloggers have done with wooden blocks I was dying to get my hands on some. The problem was this cool Brio set I had my eye on is about $35 after shipping.

But on my last trip to Target I found these Circo blocks for $13! And the best part is I got to use them the same day, no shipping wait.

I was in such a rush to rip the package open I didn't think to take a picture while they were still in the box.

I think the colors photographed pretty close to the original. The blocks are natural, white, a pale green (close to the Stockholm living room) and two hues of pink. Even if I only end up using a few of the pieces you can't beat 100 pieces for $13. Now if I could just get out of Target for under $20...

Making Minis

So about that great fiancee...

In my quest for realistic miniatures he's finally taken pity on me. After listening to me complain for what could only be the 1,000th time that good minis were next to impossible to find he suggested I try to make what I was looking for. Yeah, not so much. My woodworking frustration has left a half dozen unfinished dollhouses in our basement. So to prove that it could be done he put together this super mod black chair. (The wingback is just for scale)

Knowing that right now I am completely "Lundby-headed" as he calls it,

he made it

scale adjustable. With the back up it's about 1:12 scale & with the back lowered it's closer to Lundby size. I especially like the wood on the bottom. I'll be building a scene around it soon.

I won an AG Mini's lot on ebay and thought I'd try to set the bedroom up. The blue polka dot headboard was a little too much with the wallpaper so I flipped it. I might try to change it completely but for now it works.

The more scenes I set up the more I realize I am in dire need of accessories. I tend to have a lot of furniture but not enough accessories to make it believable. I also really need to dig and find something for the walls.

So it's not much but it's a start. Oh yeah, remember those Lundby lights I bought? Well I completely forgot to get a transformer. So smart. Thankfully I have one of the smartest fiancee's ever to re-wire an adapter from the depths of the basement into a working Lundby transformer. How lucky am I? I'm off to add lights...stay tuned.

Also, if anyone has any tips on how to get the lighting for the photos right I'd love the help.

My first set of real Lundby furniture was waiting on my porch when I got home! Thanks to the wonderful Shopping Sherpa I got such a good deal I was able to get both bathroom sets. I definitely want the kitchen set but for now the bathroom was a must have. Maybe because bathrooms get the short end of the stick in the modern department. (I mean honestly, who has a 5 inch thick wooden toilet seat?) Then again, maybe it's because my own real bathroom is at the very top of my remodel wish list.

I can't lie, as soon as I wrestled the Stockholm out of the box I ran to pillage anything remotely modern from my other dollhouses.

and I am SO excited! I've been struggling to incorporate some sort of modern design into the cookie cutter houses that are out there for about three years now. All of the wiring and wallpaper and flooring were about enough to make me want to give up. More than anything I just wanted a great place to make some modern layouts. So I finally bit the bullet and ordered my Stockholm.
